Successfully communicating with others in American Sign Linguistic communication (ASL) starts with learning to sign the manual alphabet, numbers 1 through 10, important expressions, and important ane-discussion questions. And because good advice as well involves manners, learning some bones do's and don'ts of Deaf etiquette is likewise helpful.

Signing the transmission alphabet

Learning the manual alphabet in ASL will help you when you don't know a sign as you brainstorm communicating. If you don't know the sign for something, you need to use the transmission alphabet to spell the discussion, or fingerspell. Check out and practice the manual alphabet:

Note: If you demand to fingerspell a word that has two messages that are the same, make a small bounce between the messages or just slide the repeated letter over slightly.

Signing numbers ane through x

In ASL, knowing how to sign the cardinal (counting) numbers helps y'all in everyday situations like cyberbanking and making appointments. (The video beneath shows yous how to sign numbers beyond ane through ten.)

Pay attention to the manner your palm faces when y'all sign numbers. For one through 5, your palm should face yourself. For half-dozen though nine, your palm should face out toward the person who's reading the sign.
